Do I have a right to inspect my personnel file?

Yes employees are entitled to inspect and take copies of any documents held on their own personnel file. This right is established in Section 75 (1) of the Industrial Relations Act 1984.

This section of the Act is titled: Records of Employment and states that:

An employer must make and maintain a true record of employment in such form, and containing such information, as may be prescribed.

On request of an employee, an employer must make available to the employee:

his or her record of employment and any other record kept by the employer relating to the employee's employment, and

allow the employee to inspect and take copies of those records.
