My employer has asked me to accompany one of our disabled clients on their holiday. Do I get paid?Q: I work for a disability service provider and my employer has asked me to accompany one of our clients on their holiday - to perform the same kind of work I normally do in the group home . If I agree, will I get paid for this work?A: The Award which covers disability workers (the Disability Service Providers Award) does not provide for payment for taking clients on holiday however some organisations have an industrial agreement or an internal policy that covers this issue. Because of this it is important that you check with your employer to see if there is an agreement or policy around payment for the holiday before you agree. If there is no agreement or policy than you should obtain a written agreement, signed by both your employer and yourself, to avoid any misunderstandings about how you will be paid. It is also a good idea to set out in writing other matters, such as who will pay for meals, travel and accommodation and whether you will get paid penalty rates or overtime. You might also like to get HACSU to check your written agreement over before you sign.
