As a casual employee do I have a right to a permanent position when one becomes available?
No - the employer has a right to advertise and fill the position through a merit selection. However, where it is appropriate HACSU supports the application and selection process being restricted, in the first instance, to existing casual and part-time employees already employed in the workplace.
Some employers in fact have agreements with HACSU to fill vacancies through the use of their existing casual or part-time staff but still apply merit selection to the process.
