Enrolled Nurse Alert

HACSU Nurses Sub Branch has issued an alert for all enrolled nurse (EN) members, and called on all ENs to join the union and get behind the campaign to maintain the status and integrity of the EN classification.

This follows a recent report in Tasmanian newspapers where a representative of The School of Nursing (University of Tasmania), appearing before the current Senate Inquiry into Nursing, has recommended sweeping ENs be effectively abolished.

It was suggested that "the title enrolled nurse cease to be used" That the title 'nurse' be restricted to those with a Bachelor of Nursing (or equivalent).

The report has caused a great deal of concern to enrolled nurse members of HACSU. HACSU does not support or endorse this view put to the Senate by the University of Tasmania.
HACSU State Secretary, Chris Brown, said HACSU would resist any attempts to implement such a proposal. "The last thing we need to do at the moment is divide the nursing community and start a debate that will drive more nurses away," Chris said.

"We should be enhancing the status of nurse members whether they be RNs or ENs." "Now more than ever ENs need to be in the union and to get behind the campaign." If you have any queries, or would like further information please contact HACSU Nursing Organiser, Irena Allen 63 312237 or Leanne McDougall on 62312253.
