Aldersgate Village Nursing Home gets it togetherMembers at Aldersgate Village Nursing Home are joining many other HACSU worksites and establishing a HACSU Worksite Committee. HACSU Worksite Committees are aimed at raising the level of union organisation and the union presence at the local level, and improving communication. All areas of the workplace are represented on a Worksite Committee. Committees meet regularly, discuss the issues and ensure the best way of sorting things out. HACSU State Secretary, Chris Brown, congratulated Aldersgate for their initiative and encouraged other workplaces to get on board. "Those workplaces which have already established Worksite Committees have achieved very positive results," Chris said. "There's a higher level of unionisation, members are better organised, with a stronger presence and there's less problems caused by breakdowns in communication." "Issues are identified early and not left to fester. When an issue is taken to management, management knows all members and all sections of the workforce are behind the issue, so there is a greater impetus to do something about it." "In the past a lot of the problems seem to have been caused by management not getting round to things, ignoring things, or in some cases management setting out to divide and rule, putting one section of the workforce against another." "There's a lot less chance of that happening if you have a Worksite Committee where there's good communication and everyone knows what's going on." Members wishing to establish a Worksite Committee should contact the HACSU office.
