Nursing Award winnerDavid James has been awarded the HACSU Bachelor of Nursing Award 2002 at the April Nursing Sub-branch meeting. David started out as a Sergeant in the Australian Army. He was stationed in many places around Australia and overseas in 23 years of service to his country. When David retired he was bored and went looking for something worthwhile to do with his time. He considered teaching but had already acquired many of those skills as an Army Sergeant and so chose nursing instead. We are not sure whether he achieved this, but what David did was to overcome a life-long challenge with dyslexia, working through 4 years of nurse education to achieve excellent results academically. The university helped David considerably through the use of blue tinted glasses. Today, David is working as a Registered Nurse doing his Post Graduate year at the North East Soldiers Memorial Hospital in Scottsdale. He has already completed the Level One Ambulance Officers course that allows him to go out on emergency calls. David has declined the offer to do Honours this year but is seriously considering the Post Graduate Diploma in Mental Health after he has completed his postgraduate year. As David said to the Nursing Sub-branch Committee members 'You can do anything you want to do, you just got to want to do it badly enough." Congratulations David.
