Mt Esk Nursing Home gears up Worksite CommitteeThe Mount Esk Worksite Committee is working hard to make a positive change at the workplace and is working proactively to involve members in any decision-making that has the potential to affect members. The establishment of the HACSU Worksite Committee evolved due to the sale of the facility to the aged care provider Southern Cross Homes. The sale of the facility, formally known as Nazareth House, has brought about a degree of uncertainty for members but the HACSU Worksite Committee is committed to working with members and management on matters that arise in the workplace. The Worksite Committee means the Mount Esk members now have a united voice, and many new members have been attracted to HACSU as a result. All areas of Mount Esk staff are represented on the Worksite Committee. Committee members have received training in grievance procedures, meeting skills and how to conduct the business of the Worksite Committee. The Worksite Committee is still in the early stages of development and is working with the HACSU Training Officer, Donna James, on identifying training needs. Donna believes there has been a noticeable change. "The Committee has some vocal and very committed members, and with the backing of all HACSU members they can make a positive change at Mount Esk," Donna said. "I think people are starting to realize that they are the union and it is only through them getting organised in the workplace and being united that things will get done." "HACSU officials can provide backup, advice and training but to get movement on issues members have to be organized and united on the ground and the formation of a Worksite Committee is a step in the right direction," Donna said.
