DOA issue won't lay downThe issue of payment of an allowance to orderlies for handling of DOA or dead on arrival patients will not lie down. The issue flared at the LGH, when management attempted to stop paying the $4.20 allowance, which had been paid for the last 10 years although it is not in the award. LGH orderlies refused to accept the management move and took industrial action over the matter, making this a Statewide issue. After some negotiations an agreement has been reached that an increased DOA allowance would be paid and on a Statewide basis. The snag, however, is the definition of a DOA. In scenes reminiscent of certain Monty Python scenes, management are arguing the toss about what is meant by the term "Dead On Arrival". HACSU delegates are holding a Statewide meeting to see if they can reach agreement so this matter can be laid to rest once and for all.
