New organiser inherits ideals of justiceNew HACSU Launceston Organiser, Danny James, believes in fairness and decency, and they aren’t ideals learned 5 minutes before an election! They were handed down through the generations of his family, and are the ideals that are the bedrock that sprouted the Australian ideals of a fair-go. Danny's ancestors were agricultural labourers, displaced from the workforce by the inevitable advance of machinery. They had the gall to question their treatment, and were deported to Australia for their troubles. As Danny puts it "My ancestors were not the leaders of this 1800s protest movement. The leaders were given a "fair" trial, then hung. My family were involved in writing leaflets, were convicted of this offence, sentenced as convicts to come out to Australia." "My father became involved industrially with worksite and union activities in the metal industry. That was what happened around our kitchen table." "I see unions as something that is about kitchen tables and families, getting involved in making decisions about your aspirations and goals." Danny is born and bred in Tassie and has worked all over in a range of jobs from Aussie Post to disability services, the last 12 years working in housing, including 6 years as a delegate. Danny will be organising in the public sector in the Northern Region. Good luck Danny.
