Public Sector Nurses campaign for a fair deal

This year saw one of the fiercest public sector nurse enterprise bargaining campaigns ever, as nurses fought for fair and adequate salaries and conditions.

Following a massive show of industrial strength and determination, nurses won an agreement which will, following endorsement from members, see;

  • salary increases of 20%,
  • increases in on-call payments,
  • improved night shift penalty rates,
  • more nurse educators, and,
  • other benefits for nurses.

A major breakthrough will be the introduction of a new classification stream for enrolled nurses who have medication endorsement.

The introduction of this new initiative was central to any agreement between the Government and HACSU.

Enrolled nurses are an integral part of the nursing sector and have been undervalued for too long. The HACSU Nurse Sub Branch - Enrolled Nurse Sub Committee has pressed this issue for some time.

The new EN salary scale now puts public sector ENs on a level playing field with other sectors.
