New National Forum for Health ProfessionalsHACSU, in conjunction with a number of other Branches of the Health Services Union, have recently agreed to establish a national forum to pursue the industrial interests of, and share information for, health professions across Australia. In NSW, Victoria, Tasmania, Western Australia and South Australia the HSUA's branches represent the industrial and related professional interests of health professionals. Representative and delegate structures have been set up in a number of states to represent health professionals. For example, over many years, the HACSU Health Professionals Sub Branch Executive has dealt with industrial and professional issues on behalf of Tasmanian health professionals. In November 2004, a meeting of officials and delegates from the various state branches was held in Perth to discuss common issues affecting health professionals. From that meeting it emerged branches shared many issues of concern and it was agreed a mechanism be established to facilitate greater and more consistent information exchange and coordination between the branches on issues of shared concern. In February this year a National HSU Health Professionals Forum was established to provide coordination and focus within the HSU for progressing a positive and constructive industrial, professional and political agenda for health professionals. One of the tasks for the HPF will be to oversee and promote research into the health professional workforce. The forum will provide an excellent opportunity for HACSU health professionals to have input and be informed of issues like wages and conditions claims, initiatives in other states around workforce attraction and retention, professional development activities and other matters affecting professionals.
