Giving Howard’s IR changes the bootON 10 JULY 2005 delegates and activists from many unions joined together to hand out football shaped flyers at the AFL match in Launceston at Aurora Stadium, protesting against the Howard Government’s industrial relations changes. The day began at 8am sharp on Sunday morning at the HACSU office with Jess, Megan and Julie blowing up 200 balloons and delegates and activists arriving soon after. Bright orange t-shirts were handed out, followed by a briefing, then everyone was placed into 6 pre-arranged teams with a team leader for each. Teams were then given a quantity of the brochures and a map marking the areas they were to cover. At 11.15am the large group of 50 brightly coloured activists and delegates headed out of the HACSU Launceston office on their march to the Aurora Stadium. The sight was wonderful with many people stopping to ask what was going on. The teams arrived in their allocated areas just in time to catch the family groups leaving the stadium after the underage football match and before the influx of the big crowd for the AFL game. Targa Tasmania cars had held a display at the stadium and as they left they all took a balloon and had them hanging out of their windows as they drove off down Invermay Road towards the city. What a great sight! It was a great day, beautiful weather, lots of positive responses, and most people taking the brochure to read.
