Payroll deductions versus direct debit: Why does it matter? Our union needs to stay strong. We cannot guarantee our strength, however, if we rely on payroll deductions to collect union dues. In Victoria, under the Kennett government, payroll deductions were outlawed and unions lost thousands of financial members overnight. Most are only now recovering. The Howard Government has made it clear that they want to crush unions. Moreover, unscrupulous employers are already taking advantage of the new work laws to try to lock unions out of workplaces. We must act now to protect our union. If you are currently paying your union membership dues by payroll deduction, you can make our union stronger just by changing the way in which you contribute. HACSU has several simple and convenient ways to pay your union dues. You can have them taken out of your account by direct debit, or you can have them deducted from your credit card. It will not cost you any more, and you will still be able to pay fortnightly if you wish. Most importantly, it will make your Union more secure and better able to continue to fight on your behalf. Help our union stay strong. Switch to direct debit today. Contact your local HACSU office with your bank details to change your payment method.
