Restructure win at Phillip Oakden HouseHACSU members at Phillip Oakden House have been active in the recent staff restructure. When it became known that the appointment of a new manager was imminent, staff sought to meet with management to discuss the possibility of appointing a level 4 nurse manager to the position, a rise from level 3. The management role had previously included both clinical and management functions, but HACSU members argued that there ought to be a separate management position. Management agreed and appointed a level 4 Nurse Manager. In addition, RN/EN skills-matching was undertaken to ensure a good skills blend on all shifts, and management hours were increased. Only one redundancy was necessary, this being resolved through voluntary redundancy. HACSU members were happy with the outcome. Organiser Carolyn White said, "it was really important that all members were included in the restructure and that everybody's' opinions were listened to." "The outcome of the restructure has meant staff have more management hours and those hours are used more effectively. Basically, the HACSU consultative committee got what we wanted without having to make any really major concessions."
