LGH Building and Engineering Review

A departmental review is currently being conducted into building and engineering at the LGH.

Workers are seeking improved recognition of their trade qualifications and better access to career progression.

For building and engineering delegate, Alan Smith, "there is no career path in the operational stream, a lot of us are finding that we are at the top of the tree with no where else to go."

"Basically we have four years of training, but no recognition. In some of the other streams you can get more money with no required qualifications, whereas we have a long list of required skills and qualifications but for less money."

"We are also several thousand dollars a year worse off than tradespeople in the private sector"

"We're happy that the department is putting on an engineer, but a lot of money is being spent up the management end but not a lot on the shop floor."

"What we want is fair pay for fair work," Alan said.
