New Delegates at Glenview Nursing HomeBy Peter AikenTwo new HACSU delegates have been elected at Glenview Home. Glenview, in the State's South, provides residential aged care and is a community services facility. Dawn Miller and Mary Roberts, both extended care assistants (ECAs), met with HACSU Industrial Organiser Peter Aiken several weeks ago to discuss a number of work related issues. At the meeting, both expressed a keen desire to become delegates in order to represent the views of members at their worksite. At the close of nominations, as both were the only members to nominate they were declared elected. Both are eager to become actively involved in resolving issues and representing HACSU members and shortly after the election they met with Peter and Industrial Organiser, Tania Rogers, to commence planning for organising their worksite. Asked why they decided to become Delegates Dawn and Mary said, "members need a voice at the worksite. They need someone to stand up for their rights." Dawn said, "it seemed to be a natural process as our workmates were often asking us for advice on work issues." A major motivating factor for both has been the introduction of the new Industrial Relations laws. Both stated that the laws will deprive workers of many basic rights and this has been evidenced by examples such as the recent media around Spotlight and statistics released showing a dramatic reduction in conditions of employment. Dawn said, "It would appear that many people weren't aware of the potential impact on workers and their families." "As delegates we want to establish a good working environment where issues are resolved quickly. Our aim is to eventually set up a worksite committee - to get other workers involved."
