Staff TrainingThree HACSU staff members have recently undertaken a five-day training course through Unions Tasmania to help them develop their skills as Industrial Organisers. Carolyn White, Kylie James and Cymone de Schipper completed the 'Fundamentals of Organising' course in Hobart last month. The course taught them additional skills in analysis and planning, communication and organising, grievance handling and negotiation skills. The course also provided an introduction to industrial relations law. Carolyn said, "The part I found really beneficial was when we set up role plays to practice the skills we'd learnt like negotiation skills and overcoming common objections. It really is more difficult in practice!" "The most useful thing I learnt was the organising framework - basically this was about how to go in and organise a worksite. How to identify widely and deeply felt issues in a workplace and how to go about resolving the issues and building strength in membership at the same time. We also looked at using key workplace issues to develop delegate structures, so that our members are integrally involved in solving their workplace issues."
