Activists in the PSUWA Campaign

By KELLY ANN WEBB

The Public Sector Union Wage Agreement (PSUWA) 2008 has demonstrated the amazing strength found in collective action.

A valued HACSU member, Bev Tyler of Oral Health Services in Newtown, has been instrumental in the activism and promotion of this campaign.

Bev has been a qualified dental Technician for 25 years and has worked in the Department of Health and Human Services for the last 15 years.

Bev has been involved in all facets of the PSUWA campaign, from starring in the 'It's just not fair' television advertisement, to speaking at Stop Work meetings and BBQ's at parliament over the last six months.

Bev has tirelessly displayed her support throughout the duration of the campaign by;

  • Speaking publicly at the recent Hobart Show Day about the PSUWA
  • Wearing her PSUWA08 t-shirts to work everyday
  • Taking petitions to the streets
  • Decking out the Bev Mobile (see picture) with campaign signs and stickers
  • Preparing a PSUWA oral health song with music to match
  • And still finds time to help turn sausages at PSUWA BBQs

Bev said the PSUWA campaign has been extremely positive.

"Members have been proactive, they have been angry, they have wanted to fight, fought and have now won," she said.

"I have learnt a hell of a lot about what your rights are, fighting for those rights and fighting for your worth."

Bev said the new offer has made her efforts in the PSUWA campaign all the more worthwhile.

"I'm very bloody happy, and I am happy for the backbone of the public sector, the ones that get their hands dirty, without them nothing else would exist in the public sector and they deserve this," she said.

"Support from members has been exceptional, and I would like to extend a big thanks to the HACSU team for going above and beyond the call of duty."

Oral Health Services participated in a number of industrial actions throughout the bans to persuade the Government to return to the negotiating table.

The members that participated in the actions were our dedicated Customer Service Officers (administration and clerical stream), Dental Technicians (Technical stream) and Dental Assistants (Operational streams).

HACSU State Secretary, Chris Brown said the show of collective action and dedication to the PSUWA cause has been amazing, and HACSU wishes to extend a big congratulation to all members who participated.

"The show of support and eagerness to fight has been spectacular throughout the entire campaign," he said.

"Members and delegates have shown that they will fight for what is right, and have been instrumental in achieving this new offer."

Well done to everyone!
