Industrial Protection

One of the most important reasons workers become members of HACSU is to ensure that their rights are recognised and protected when they are at work. HACSU members, like other workers, recognise that employers sometimes ignore their concerns and make decisions which could be better if they took more notice of members' views. Unfortunately, employers do not always act fairly in such matters as rosters, workers compensation, changes to hours, staffing levels, disciplinary matters and many others.

If you need industrial advice or assistance, want to change your membership details of access any other HACSU services call HACSUassist. HACSUassist is a phone based advice line staffed by experienced Industrial Organisers from 8.30am - 5.00pm Monday to Friday.

HACSUassist will be able to help you with the following;

  • Assistance with handling grievances
  • Protecting your entitlements
  • Assisting you with disciplinary matters
  • Bullying and harassment issues
  • Occupational Health and Safety
  • Workers Compensation
  • Workplace restructuring
  • Advice on awards and agreements
  • Keeping you informed of union activities and events
  • Any other queries about industrial matters.

The best protection provided in the workplace is where members as a group take responsibility for ensuring that the employer acts fairly and sensibly. There are many examples of members collectively improving the practices at their workplace, ensuring that payments are as provided for in the Award or Agreement, that staffing levels are maintained, that wages and conditions are improved (through Enterprise Bargaining Agreements).

Experience shows that in worksites which do not have many Union members, or that Union members are not active, conditions are less than in unionised worksites.

HACSU has many elected representatives (delegates, worksite committee members) and other contacts and active members to provide on site advice and support to HACSU members in their workplace.

If you believe that you are not getting all your entitlements, you are having disciplinary problems with your employer, your hours are being altered without your agreement, you are been threatened with dismissal or redundancy, then you should seek advice from your HACSU Worksite Delegate, HACSU Worksite Committee, HACSUassist or your HACSU Worksite Organiser.
