Public Sector Members Vote "YES"

06 April 2004

The result of the ballot on the Public Sector Unions Wages Agreement was announced in Hobart today by the Returning Officer, Phillip Harris from the law firm Ogilvie Jennings.

84.7% of members of HACSU, CPSU and LHMU voted in favour of accepting the Agreement. The statistics supplied by the Returning Officer were:

Ballots returned 3338
Yes Votes 2826
No Votes 502
Informal Votes 10

HACSU State Secretary Chris Brown said that the Agreement could now be registered with the Tasmanian Industrial Commission and the task of implementing the provisions of the Agreement could begin.

The Agreement is by far the most comprehensive ever negotiated for public sector members. In addition to the 14% wage increase, a number of important conditions and work related matters were addressed such as excessive workload, measures to deal with bullying and harassment and change management.

The public sector unions will now jointly set up an Agreement Implementation Committee to ensure that Departments and Agencies implement all the provisions contained in the Agreement.
