Mersey Community – Industrial Action Possible Next Week

16 April 2004

HACSU members at the Mersey Community Hospital remain extremely angry over the downgrading of services. At a membership meeting this week, members unanimously carried a resolution demanding the reinstatement of full Maternity and Accident and Emergency services.

HACSU members at the Mersey Community Hospital remain extremely angry over the downgrading of services. At a membership meeting this week, members unanimously carried a resolution demanding the reinstatement of full Maternity and Accident and Emergency services.

Members also passed a resolution demanding that in the event that Healthscope is unable to fulfill the terms of its contract with the State Government to provide public services at Mersey, then the Mersey Community Hospital should be handed back to the responsibility of the State Government with assurance of full services and no job losses.

Cabinet will consider a report on Monday by Prof Cameron on the Mersey Hospital situation with Health Services Minister David Llewellyn expected to make an announcement on the future of Maternity and Accident and Emergency services at the Hospital following the meeting.

HACSU State Secretary Chris Brown said that members at the Mersey Hospital will meet at 12.30 on Tuesday next week to consider the Government's response to the Cameron report. However if the Government's response falls short of the reinstatement of full Maternity and Emergency services, then members will be asked to consider immediate industrial action.

Doctor's at the Mersey Hospital commenced industrial action at midnight on Wednesday to force Healthscope to reinstate the services. This follows an announcement by the Doctor's that they were able to provide a roster for full and adequate Accident and Emergency services at the hospital.
