Mayne Health Commits to Protect Employee Entitlements if Hospital Sold

10 December 2002

In a meeting between HACSU Officers and Martin Nally (National Personnel Director) and Neil Beer (State Director of Hospitals) held on Tuesday 3rd December HACSU was given a firm commitment that in the event that Mayne sold or withdrew from their Tasmanian operations there would be a process put in place which guarantees all employee’s entitlements.

Martin Nally advised that a national review of assets was currently being undertaken by Mayne and that at this stage NO decision had been made concerning any hospital.

HACSU was given a commitment that we would be advised as soon as a decision has been made.

In the event that Tasmanian hospitals are affected by any decision arising from the review a process will be negotiated to ensure that all employees' entitlements will be guaranteed. The process will involve determining employees' current employment status, e.g. permanent full time, part time or casual,, their hours, all leave entitlements, date of commencement etc.

Mayne has advised that they will require any prospective purchaser to offer positions to current employees which reflect their current arrangements.

Mayne has also advised that they intend to finalise the current Enterprise Bargaining Agreement as soon as agreement can be reached. This will ensure that employees will get a wage increase and will also provide further protection for employees' wages and conditions into the future.

Once we have a draft agreement membership meetings will be arranged for members to consider the draft agreement before finalisation and registration in the Tasmanian Industrial Commission.

Members are advised that if Mayne decides to sell or withdraw from its Tasmanian operations the process of sale will take a considerable period of time and until a decision is made it is "business as usual".

Members will be kept informed of progress on this issue.
