Aged Care employees vote in favour of Industrial Action01 April 2009HACSU General Staff members have voted strongly in support of Industrial Action at Meercroft Home’s Aged Care facility in the State’s North West, in a ballot counted this week by the Australian Electoral Commission. HACSU had been in negotiations with Meercroft Home since April 2008; however negotiations stalled in January when Meercroft Home reduced their original yearly wage increase from 3.5 per cent to 1.8 per cent, for General Staff members over the next two years. HACSU Assistant State Secretary, Tim Jacobson, said the current wage offer is an insult to those employees who commit tirelessly to the aged and frail members of our community. "The employer has also withdrawn its original offer to introduce paid maternity leave and pro rata long service leave," he said. "This offer is extremely disappointing to HACSU members. The offer is miserly in comparison to similar organisations that have already completed negotiations for a much better deal. "HACSU has written to the employer seeking that negotiations be reconvened in an attempt to avoid industrial action, the employer has not responded, and clearly the ball is now in the employer's court." The recent ballot result has demonstrated HACSU members' feelings of frustration and anger towards Meercroft management, as they believed the negotiations were in good faith and that they would result in a fair and reasonable offer. HACSU is disappointed Industrial Action has now become necessary to encourage Meercroft Home to provide a decent wages increases for members.
