Corumbene Nursing Home –HACSU angry over Staff Cuts07 August 2003Members of the Health and Community Services Union (HACSU) at Corumbene Nursing Home will meet on site at 2.00pm on Friday 8 August 2003 to discuss management’s proposal to significantly reduce the hours of staff in all areas of the home. Corumbene is located at New Norfolk and the majority of residents come from the Derwent Valley area. Management have stated that the cuts are needed because of a significant deficit. HACSU industrial officer Leanne McDougall said: "Members are extremely angry that they are being required to fix a problem that was not of their making. The home is not generously staffed now and the cuts will compromise members' ability to provide high standards of care to the residents. As well, our members are amongst the lowest paid in Tasmania and cannot afford a loss of income. Members are questioning why management did not approach us earlier to discuss the financial predicament that Corumbene now finds it self in rather than waiting until it became a significant problem. They have been very active in identifying alternative cost cutting measures but management are adamant that the cuts are the only way to go. This situation is extremely unfair and members are meeting tomorrow to consider what action they will take to fight this."
