Temp? - Don't Sign10 August 2002HACSU advises members who are "temporary employees" to seek advice from the union before signing a new contract. This is especially important if you have been working without a contract for some time. Signing a contract may remove any claim you might have for ongoing employment. In recent times, some temporary employees who are not currently under a contract of employment have been approached to sign new fixed term contracts. In some cases this follows a period where an employee has worked continuously on an uncontracted basis for considerable periods of time. The Department in these cases appears to be relying upon the existence of a new contract, which stipulates a termination date, to cease the employment of these employees. Remember, seek advice from HACSU before you sign a contract. Should members require further information with regard to this matter you are urged to contact your Workplace Delegate or HACSU office.
