No updates on ramping...industrial action it is

Posted on 21 December, 2023 in Ambulance

Your Ambulance delegates have been busy in the background trying to once and for all get the staffing crisis at Ambulance Tasmania under control. We’ve been doing more media and more campaigning than ever with workers like you, seemingly to no avail.

Now, your Ambulance Employees Sub-branch Executive have decided that enough is enough.

We’ll be kicking off industrial action to highlight the growing list of issues that you’re facing because of this government’s resourcing crisis.

Whether you work on road, in comms, in clinical services or elsewhere, the fact is that you’re under the pump and there’s just not enough people to cover the basics like leave – and your managers seem powerless to do much else than try and keep the show on the road.

Despite our efforts, it’s been crickets. That means it’s time to stick together and take action to show the government that Tasmanians, and ambos, deserve better.

Action will start at 7am this Friday 22 December and continue indefinitely. The list of actions we’re taking for the first phase of the campaign are:

1. The wearing of union branded clothing whilst on duty – so make sure you get your pink t-shirt out or get in touch if you don’t have one!

2. Displaying and distributing union campaign material, including chalking vehicles with approved campaign slogans.

We’ll have updated slogans coming out regularly so make sure you keep an eye out for more information, but here’s a list that your Ambulance delegates came up with to start off:
Santa's sleigh moves faster: fix ramp delays now!
Unwrap swift care: end Ambulance ramping
More elves needed: address understaffing for quicker response
Fix the Health system: Ambulances shouldn't wait in the workshop
Community let down: fix Ambulance now
Short staffing doesn’t jingle our bells

3. We’ll also be reporting staffing numbers for the regions and SOC on our social media pages and elsewhere so that everyday Tasmanians know the reality of what you’re actually dealing with.
We’re keen to hear from you about any other actions you might like to take part in – so please get in touch if you’ve got any ideas.

Ultimately, we’ll be keeping the pressure up until you get improved resourcing, a serious commitment to recruit more workers, transfer of care delay protocol actually implemented properly, and to enjoy your well-earned leave like every other worker.

It’s time we ramped up the action to get what the government knows we need: to fix Ambulance.

We’ll be out and about over the Chrissy break to drop some chalk pens to you at your station and chat more about our action. If you need any further information, please contact us on 1300 880 032 or on [email protected] – see you soon!
